Litter promotes fires, bacteria, rats, and disease. Litter also increases insurance rates as litter causes thousands of accidents each year.
Littering is illegal. Throwing out something that weighs less than 15 pounds is a Class 3 Misdemeanor punishable by a fine and up to 24 hours community service.
NC House Bill 100 aims to increase littering fines to anywhere from $500 to $2,000 for the first offense, and up to $4,000 for the second offence.
